Mohammed Ismail Sherif, globally known as Black Sherif, has once again rewritten Ghana’s music history after winning the coveted Artiste of the Year award at the 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Accra International Conference Centre. With this historic victory, Black Sherif becomes the youngest artist ever to win the prestigious award twice, adding his 2026 triumph to his first Artiste of the Year win in 2023, a milestone that firmly establishes him among Ghana’s all time greats.

For months leading up to the awards night, industry conversations, fan debates, and music analysts all pointed to one name. This time, the prediction matched the result. Black Sherif’s dominance during the year under review was undeniable. The Konongo born superstar maintained his position as Ghana’s most streamed artiste for the third consecutive year, dominating digital platforms with multiple chart topping records. His critically acclaimed album Iron Boy enjoyed remarkable success locally and internationally, while hit songs like Sacrifice continued to break streaming records and capture audiences across Africa and beyond.

Ahead of the ceremony, Black Sherif spoke confidently about his chances in interviews, telling media personalities, “We deserve it, don’t you think?” He later added, “My fans will be happy. And the award, if I want it, I want it for the fans. It is a validation for them. My own validation is in the music I compose.” Days before the event, he also shared his mindset, saying, “I’m so ready. We are on a mission, and the TGMA is a celebration of people on a mission. So we are going there to have fun.” By the end of the night, that mission had been fully accomplished.

Black Sherif’s Artiste of the Year win was not his only success on the night. He also picked up major awards including Songwriter of the Year and Best Hip Hop Song, completing what many are describing as one of the most dominant performances in recent TGMA history. To secure the ultimate prize, he overcame fierce competition from some of Ghana’s biggest names, including Sarkodie, Stonebwoy, Medikal, Wendy Shay, and Diana Hamilton, a lineup packed with former winners and established heavyweights.

At just a few years into a career already decorated with global recognition, chart success, and now two Artiste of the Year trophies, Black Sherif continues to prove that he is not simply having a moment, he is building a legacy. From Konongo to the world, Black Sherif’s journey is becoming one of the most remarkable stories in modern Ghanaian music, and after this latest triumph at the 27th TGMA, the conversation is no longer about whether he belongs at the top. The question now is how far he can go.
