Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has dismissed allegations that he attempted to influence voters at a polling station in his constituency during the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primary.

In a statement issued on Saturday, January 31, he described the claims as false and misleading, maintaining that he complied fully with both party and Electoral Commission guidelines throughout the voting process.

Mr Afenyo-Markin said he was not present near any voting booth as alleged and did not engage in any conduct that could amount to interference or undue influence on delegates.

“At no time have I been anywhere near the voting area as claimed, nor have I engaged in any conduct that could be construed, even remotely, as undue influence,” he stated.

According to him, his presence in the constituency was limited to casting his vote and carrying out lawful oversight permitted under the rules governing the exercise.

He argued that the allegation is part of what he sees as a series of attempts by opponents to tarnish his image since the start of the flagbearer race.

Mr Afenyo-Markin also referred to an earlier episode following the NPP peace pact signing in Accra on January 22, 2026, where a video circulated online suggesting he refused to applaud a candidate. He insisted that the clip was manipulated and did not reflect what actually happened.

He further invited journalists and independent observers to verify events on the ground in Winneba, stressing that media and observer reports offer objective accounts of activities at polling centres.

The Effutu MP called on the Electoral Commission, security agencies, and political actors to uphold peace, transparency, and due process, warning that the spread of misinformation risks undermining confidence in internal party elections and the broader democratic system.
