The Government of Ghana has declared Friday, January 9, 2026, a nationwide public holiday to mark Constitution Day.
The decision follows an Executive Instrument issued by President John Dramani Mahama, moving the observance from its traditional date of January 7, which falls on a Wednesday this year, to Friday to allow for wider public participation.
In a statement released on January 2, 2026, the Ministry of the Interior said the change is in line with the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2001 (Act 601), which permits the adjustment of public holidays when necessary.
Signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the statement urged the public to take note of the new date and make the appropriate arrangements.
The Minister explained that shifting the holiday to a Friday makes it easier for more Ghanaians to fully observe the day, as midweek holidays often limit participation.
Constitution Day marks the coming into force of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution and serves as a reminder of the country’s democratic foundations and commitment to constitutional governance.
