A 38-year-old woman has been arrested by police for allegedly impersonating a senior police officer and defrauding the family of a deceased police inspector.
The suspect, identified as Sarah Wilson, popularly known as Maame Esi, is alleged to have used a voice-changing application called “Magic Voice” to disguise her identity and pose as the Central North Regional Police Commander.
According to police sources, Wilson allegedly contacted the late officer’s father shortly after his son’s death and convinced him that funds were needed to facilitate funeral arrangements and process official documents, including the death certificate.
Trusting that he was dealing with a senior police official, the bereaved father reportedly transferred GH¢2,000 to the suspect.
Investigators say Wilson later demanded an additional GH¢2,000, claiming the money was required to complete other administrative procedures related to the officer’s death.
The second request, however, aroused suspicion, prompting the deceased officer’s father to lodge a complaint with the police.
Following investigations, officers tracked down and arrested the suspect. Police sources indicate that Wilson admitted to the offence during interrogation.
She is expected to be processed through the courts as investigations into the matter continue.
The police have meanwhile urged the public to verify the identities of individuals requesting money on behalf of institutions and to report any suspicious activities to law enforcement authorities.
