A leading figure in the long-running Ga Odumase land and chieftaincy dispute, Sowah Odootei, also known as Nii Acquah III, is under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Accra Regional Command over allegations of death threats, assault, and property damage.

The development follows a formal complaint filed by Michael Adaye Kwasi, prompting CID officials to invite the chief for questioning on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

Complainants Demand Justice

Speaking to the media, Mr. Kwasi and another complainant, Emmanuel Asamani, called for swift justice, alleging a series of coordinated attacks linked to the ongoing land dispute.

Mr. Kwasi stated that tensions between him and the chief escalated after he filed a case at the Amasaman Circuit Court over a land matter, which he says was followed by the burning of his farm and livestock.

He further alleged that the accused ignored a court summons served through a bailiff.

Alleged Death Threats Ahead of Funeral

Mr. Kwasi also claimed he received direct threats ahead of the final funeral rites of his late uncle, held on Friday, April 24, 2026, in Ga Odumase.

According to him, he was warned not to attend the funeral or risk harm.

“He had sent words to me that he would also be attending the funeral, and if I attended, I should accept whatever happens,” he alleged.

Attack on Shop and Loss of Property

The complainant further alleged that individuals linked to the chief attacked his provision shop, assaulted a female attendant, and made away with money and goods.

He claimed the incident occurred early in the morning, adding that the attackers:

  • Assaulted his shop attendant
  • Took cash, including sales proceeds and savings
  • Stole goods including rice and beverages
  • Destroyed rented equipment, including wheelbarrows
  • Blocked access to the shop using sand

“They slapped the lady, took money, and blocked the entrance so nobody could enter,” he recounted.

He estimates the total losses at several thousands of cedis.

Alleged Assault and Injuries

Separately, Mr. Asamani presented what he described as medical and photographic evidence of injuries sustained during an alleged attack.

He claimed he was assaulted by unidentified individuals linked to the dispute while returning from an outing with relatives.

“I saw two pickups arrive and suddenly we were attacked. By the time I realized what was happening, I was in the hospital,” he said.

He added that he has since made multiple police reports and continues to experience health complications as a result of the injuries.

Police Investigation Underway

The CID has reportedly directed all parties involved to report back on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, to assist with ongoing investigations and finalise documentation ahead of possible court proceedings.

Security sources indicate that if the allegations are substantiated, the case could involve charges including:

  • Criminal intimidation
  • Assault
  • Malicious damage to property

Background Tensions

The Ga Odumase dispute has long been marked by tensions over land ownership and traditional authority, with periodic clashes and court cases contributing to instability in parts of the community.

Authorities are expected to intensify investigations as pressure mounts from complainants demanding accountability and protection.
