John Dramani Mahama has officially unveiled the Free Primary Healthcare Programme, a major policy initiative designed to improve access to essential and affordable healthcare for all Ghanaians.

The programme was launched at the Shai Osudoku District Hospital, marking a renewed national focus on preventive healthcare and early intervention.

The initiative prioritises early diagnosis, routine health screening, and the expansion of community-based health services. It introduces a nationwide preventive healthcare approach that encourages regular medical check-ups while removing financial and administrative barriers to accessing basic care at the primary level.

Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, stated that services under the programme will be provided free at the point of use. He described the policy as a strategic shift toward proactive healthcare delivery, supported by digital innovation and strengthened nationwide outreach systems.

According to government, the intervention is expected to significantly reduce the financial burden on citizens, improve early detection of diseases, and broaden access to quality primary healthcare services.

The Free Primary Healthcare Programme is also seen as a key step in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system and advancing progress toward universal health coverage.
