President John Dramani Mahama has called on young Ghanaians to explore opportunities in agriculture, describing the sector as a vital driver of the country’s future development.

Speaking at the inaugural Ghana Agrotech Fair 2026 on Tuesday, March 17, themed “Transforming Agribusiness through Local Innovation and Technology,” President Mahama said agriculture should no longer be seen as outdated.

“For young people, agriculture is not a sector of the past. It is one of the frontiers of our future,” he said.

He highlighted that modern agriculture now demands a variety of skills, including engineering, software development, data science, agronomy, logistics, and innovation.

The President also appealed to financial institutions and investors to back agribusiness, particularly in agricultural technology, stressing that it must evolve into a scalable and bankable industry.

“To our financial institutions and investors, agrotech must move from an admired concept to a bankable and scalable industry,” he said.

Research institutions were urged to turn findings into practical solutions for farmers, moving innovations from the lab to the field.

“Research must move from the laboratory to the field, from prototypes to production, and from knowledge to enterprise,” he noted.

President Mahama praised scientists from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research for achieving a breakthrough in wheat production, revealing that demonstration farms have recorded yields of four to five tonnes per hectare.

He said this advancement could significantly reduce the country’s dependence on wheat imports, which currently cost Ghana nearly $400 million annually.

“Our national vision is clear,” he added, underscoring the role of agriculture in building a sustainable and self-reliant economy.
