A leading member of the Zongo for Mahama movement has petitioned the leadership of Ghana’s security agencies over alleged assault, intimidation and abuse of power by some police officers in the Central Region.
Hajia Mariam Mohammed, the National Women Organizer of Zongo for Mahama, has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and the National Security Coordinator, Osman Abdul Razak, calling for an urgent investigation into the conduct of certain officers attached to the Pentecost Divisional Police Command and the Ojobi Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

In the petition dated March 3, 2026, Hajia Mariam Mohammed alleged that several residents and affected individuals had reported cases of assault, harassment and intimidation by some officers operating within the jurisdiction of the two commands under the Central Regional Police Command.
According to her, the alleged conduct of the officers has created fear and raised concerns about professionalism within the security services.

She further indicated that the alleged actions appear to be attempts to conceal compromised and unprofessional behaviour, a situation she believes undermines the rule of law and weakens public confidence in law enforcement institutions.
“The Ghana Police Service is constitutionally mandated to protect lives and property and to ensure that the fundamental rights and freedoms of all persons are respected,” the petition noted.

However, she warned that if the alleged misconduct is not addressed promptly, it could lead to injustice and instability in the affected communities.
Hajia Mariam Mohammed therefore urged the leadership of the Ghana Police Service and the National Security Secretariat to take immediate steps to restore public trust.

Among the key demands in the petition are an independent investigation into the alleged misconduct of the officers, disciplinary action against any personnel found culpable, and protection for citizens and foreigners who may be vulnerable to harassment and intimidation.
She also called on the security agencies to reinforce professionalism, transparency and respect for human rights within the affected police commands.

The petition comes at a time when President John Dramani Mahama has been advocating stronger accountability and professionalism within state institutions as part of his governance agenda.
Hajia Mariam Mohammed expressed confidence that the authorities will treat the matter with urgency to safeguard the integrity of Ghana’s security institutions and ensure justice for affected individuals.

She emphasized that citizens deserve policing that is lawful, professional and respectful of human dignity, adding that no officer should use the authority of the state to intimidate the very people they are sworn to protect.
