The National Democratic Congress has congratulated the New Patriotic Party for conducting what it describes as a peaceful and incident-free presidential primary that produced Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 general elections.
In a statement released in Accra on Sunday, February 1, 2026, and signed by National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the NDC praised the overall organisation of the exercise and noted that the process was carried out without violence.
According to the party, the conduct of the primary reflects a shared responsibility among political actors to uphold democratic standards and promote stability within Ghana’s electoral system.
The statement also commended the Ghana Police Service for its security deployment and coordination, describing the arrangements as effective and professional in ensuring a smooth voting and collation process.
The NDC further indicated that it welcomes continued engagement among political parties toward strengthening democratic practice and inter-party cooperation.
It also acknowledged concession messages issued by candidates who were unsuccessful in the contest and expressed the expectation that the reconciliatory tone expressed publicly would be matched by actions going forward.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia emerged winner of the NPP presidential primary with 56.48 percent of valid votes cast by delegates. Former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong placed second with 46,554 votes, representing 23.76 percent.
Former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr Bryan Acheampong came third with 36,303 votes, representing 18.53 percent. Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum followed in fourth position with 1,999 votes, or 1.02 percent, while Kwabena Agyei Agyepong placed fifth with 402 votes, representing 0.21 percent.
With the primary concluded, attention now shifts to party reorganisation and long-term campaign positioning ahead of the 2028 national polls.
