The Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC), in consultation with the Ministry of the Interior, has ordered the temporary closure of the Ho Central Mosque for two weeks, effective Thursday, January 1, 2026, following a leadership dispute within the Muslim community.
The decision was announced in a statement signed by the Volta Regional Minister, Mr. James Gunu, on Wednesday, December 31, 2025. According to the statement, tensions have escalated due to competing claims by two individuals to the position of Regional Chief Imam, raising concerns about public safety and security.

REGSEC has also declared the disputed area a crime scene to allow for investigations as authorities work toward a permanent resolution of the matter.
The closure follows an emergency REGSEC meeting held on Monday, December 29, 2025, to assess the situation and prevent any potential breach of peace. Officials say the two-week shutdown is intended to create a calm and neutral atmosphere to support mediation and dialogue among all affected parties.
REGSEC has appealed to the feuding factions to remain calm and commit to peaceful engagement, emphasizing that the safety of worshippers, the sanctity of the mosque, and unity within the Muslim community are paramount.
