Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has revealed that the government will implement a significant upward review of tariffs paid to service providers under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) starting in 2026. The adjustment will see tariffs rise by an average of 120 percent.

The Minister made the disclosure during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, December 1, 2025. He explained that the decision follows years of complaints from healthcare providers about the inadequacy of current tariff rates, which they argue undermine effective service delivery.

“From next year, the tariffs given to service providers will go up. They have consistently said what we pay is unrealistic, so government has agreed to increase the tariffs by 120 percent on average. We believe this will be a game changer for the scheme,” he said.

According to Mr. Akandoh, the review is part of broader efforts to restore confidence in the NHIS and improve the quality of care available to subscribers. He said the government expects that the adjustment will enhance provider motivation, boost sustainability, and ultimately lead to better patient experiences at health facilities nationwide.
