Unemployed Graduate Nurses, Midwives Plan Fresh Protest Over Posting Delays

The Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association is renewing pressure on government as thousands of its members remain at home years after completing their training. The group says it is preparing a major demonstration to demand immediate postings.

A protest scheduled for this week had to be called off after the association could not conclude security arrangements with the Greater Accra Regional Police Command. That setback has done little to ease the rising frustration among the affected graduates.

Speaking to the press, Gamal Osman, a 2021 graduate, said many of them are at their breaking point.

“I’ve been home for four years now. We are all stranded,” he said. “Finishing school and having to depend on others is tough. Even getting money to buy water is a challenge.”

The association says it will keep pushing through every legal channel until government posts the backlog of nurses and midwives who have been waiting some for up to five years.
