The government is set to boost Ghana’s public transportation system with the acquisition of 140 new buses for the State Transport Company (STC) within the next two months, according to Minister for Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe.
The move forms part of broader efforts to address transportation challenges across the country and improve mobility for commuters and long-distance travellers.
Public transportation operators have come under increasing pressure in recent years as rising demand for travel continues to expose gaps in service delivery, including overcrowding, delays, and inadequate transport options on several routes.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, June 8, the Transport Minister outlined government plans to expand the national transport fleet and strengthen public transport services.
He indicated that the government’s transport improvement programme extends beyond the 100 Metro Mass Transit (MMT) buses commissioned earlier this year and includes substantial investment in STC to improve intercity travel.
According to him, the arrival of the new buses will significantly increase the number of high-capacity vehicles available to serve the travelling public.
“We know the difficulties that we are experiencing with transportation, but we are very certain that the next 100 MMT buses will come in within the next two months, and STC will also have 140 buses. We will be able to have more high-occupancy buses,” the Minister stated.
The planned expansion is expected to improve connectivity between major cities and towns, reduce pressure on existing transport services, and provide more reliable travel options for passengers.
Industry observers believe the additional buses could help ease congestion within the public transport sector while supporting government efforts to modernise the country’s transportation network and enhance passenger comfort.
The announcement is expected to be welcomed by commuters and transport users who have consistently called for increased investment in public transportation infrastructure to meet growing demand across the country.
