President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a state-of-the-art Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan facility at the Swedish Ghana Medical Centre in Accra, describing the project as a significant step towards transforming Ghana’s healthcare system and achieving medical sovereignty.

According to President Mahama, the advanced diagnostic facility will greatly enhance the country’s capacity for early cancer detection, accurate diagnosis and improved treatment outcomes, while reducing the growing dependence on overseas medical care.

He noted that many Ghanaians currently travel abroad for specialised medical treatment at huge financial cost, but the establishment of the PET Scan centre marks a turning point in strengthening local healthcare delivery.

The President further stated that the facility has positioned Ghana to become a future medical hub within the West African sub-region, capable of attracting patients from neighbouring countries seeking advanced diagnostic and specialist healthcare services.

President Mahama used the occasion to announce a number of major interventions across the healthcare, education and housing sectors aimed at improving the living standards of Ghanaians.

These interventions include the construction of new regional hospitals, the installation of additional CAT laboratories across the country and the rollout of teacher housing projects to improve accommodation for educators.

He also highlighted the government’s $300 million STARR-J initiative, which seeks to eliminate the double-track system in Senior High Schools by 2027 through expanded educational infrastructure and improved learning facilities.

The President commended the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and the management of the Swedish Ghana Medical Centre for what he described as their visionary investment and commitment to national development.

He stressed that quality healthcare, teacher welfare and access to education remain central pillars of Ghana’s development agenda and essential to building a stronger and more prosperous nation.
