President John Dramani Mahama is in Abuja, Nigeria, to attend the 68th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, scheduled for Sunday, December 14, 2025, at the Presidential Villa.
The summit will bring together leaders from across West Africa for high-level discussions on the future of the ECOWAS Community, with a special debate expected to focus on the bloc’s long-term direction. Key issues on the agenda include political stability, regional security cooperation, and efforts to strengthen economic integration.
President Mahama is expected to participate in a closed-door session where leaders will assess regional security challenges, review mediation efforts, and consider strategies to deepen economic ties among member states. Other major items for discussion include the presentation of the 2025 Annual Report on the State of the Community, developments in the political transition in Guinea, and a review of the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme.

The summit is expected to conclude with the adoption of a final communiqué, followed by a joint press conference by ECOWAS leaders.
Meanwhile, earlier in the week, the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, meeting in Abuja, unanimously endorsed President Mahama as the sole ECOWAS candidate for the position of Chairperson of the African Union when the rotational slot returns to West Africa in 2027. The endorsement is expected to receive formal approval by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government at Sunday’s summit.
