The National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons (NACSA) says the Greater Accra Region has recorded the highest number of firearms surrendered under the ongoing Gun Amnesty Programme.

The programme, which started on December 1, allows people to voluntarily register or hand over unlicensed and illegal firearms without fear of arrest, questioning or prosecution. It is expected to end on January 15, 2026.

Speaking to the media on Friday, December 26, 2025, the Executive Secretary of NACSA, Dr Adam Bonaa, said most of the weapons collected so far have come from the Greater Accra Region, with support from security agencies.

Dr Bonaa was speaking after a visit to the National Mosque in Accra, where he met the National Chief Imam to engage the Muslim community on the importance of the initiative. He said the visit was necessary because of the Chief Imam’s strong influence and long-standing role in promoting peace in the country.

According to Dr Bonaa, the National Chief Imam has agreed to serve as an ambassador for the Gun Amnesty Programme and help encourage people to voluntarily surrender illegal firearms.

“The Chief Imam is a strong voice for peace. He always calls for calm and restraint, even in difficult situations. That is why his support for this programme is very important,” he said.

Dr Bonaa added that the Chief Imam welcomed the initiative and pledged to support efforts to reduce the spread of illegal weapons within communities.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Duuti Tuaruka, who joined the visit, assured the public that anyone who surrenders a weapon under the amnesty will not be arrested.

He encouraged individuals in possession of illegal firearms to take advantage of the programme and hand them over to security agencies before the deadline.
