Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is expected to visit the Ministry of Transport on Friday, January 16, to hold discussions with sector leadership over persistent challenges facing public transportation in the Greater Accra Region.

The visit follows mounting public frustration over the shortage of commercial vehicles, particularly during peak hours, leading to long waiting times, overcrowding, and rising transport fares across the capital.

Sources indicate that discussions will centre on steps already taken by the ministry, as well as new interventions being considered to address the shortage of buses and ease the daily burden on commuters. The engagement forms part of broader government efforts to improve mobility in Accra and stabilise the public transport system.

In parallel, the Ministry of Transport is also expected to meet separately with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other transport unions to explore long-term solutions to the ongoing crisis.

The renewed urgency follows chaotic scenes witnessed in several parts of Accra on Thursday evening, where an acute lack of commercial buses disrupted movement along key routes.

Along the Achimota Old Road, some commuters resorted to boarding cargo trucks to get home, while at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, passengers heading towards Amasaman and nearby communities were left stranded for extended periods. In some cases, commuters waited close to an hour without securing transport.

Similar situations were reported on other major corridors, with the scarcity of buses forcing many passengers to scramble for alternative and often unsafe means of transportation.
