President John Dramani Mahama is urging the Bank of Ghana to step up nationwide education on how Ghanaians use and handle the cedi, saying a modern and resilient currency system depends on both strong institutions and an informed public.

Speaking at the Currency Anniversary Conference on Tuesday, November 18, he outlined three priority areas where public awareness must improve to protect the value and integrity of the national currency.

First, he called for stronger advocacy for the use of the cedi in all domestic transactions. According to him, broader acceptance of the local currency helps stabilise the economy and limits the public’s exposure to exchange rate pressures.

He also drew attention to the careless handling of banknotes, which increases printing costs and shortens the lifespan of notes in circulation. He encouraged the public to adopt better habits that preserve the quality of the currency.

The President further underscored the importance of financial literacy. He noted that a well-informed public is better placed to avoid fraud, make sound financial decisions, and hold institutions accountable, ultimately supporting a stronger and more trustworthy monetary environment.
