Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested three persons following the interception of a passenger bus transporting a large quantity of ammunition, including 2,600 rounds of AK-47 bullets, at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier.

In a statement issued by the Regional Police Command, the arrests were made on December 26, 2025, during a routine stop of a Kia Grandbird bus travelling from Accra to Walewale, with Paga as its final destination.

A search conducted by officers at the checkpoint led to the discovery of two concealed containers filled with ammunition. The driver of the bus, Kwame Afram, and his mate, Godfred Essel, were immediately arrested.

Police further disclosed that a third suspect, Mohammed Siisu, aged 21, believed to be the intended recipient of the ammunition, was arrested the following day, December 27, in Walewale when he allegedly arrived to collect the consignment.

A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered additional items hidden beneath the driver’s seat. These included two bulletproof plates, a black crushed helmet, and a pair of long boots.

All three suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. The bus and all recovered items have been impounded as exhibits.

Police say investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the ammunition and its intended use, assuring the public of their commitment to preventing the circulation of illegal weapons and maintaining public safety.
