Police in the Eastern Region have arrested three people who were caught stealing cartons of sardines from a container truck that overturned at Kwahu Fodoa on the Accra–Kumasi Highway.
The truck, loaded with sardines and travelling from Accra to Kumasi, toppled onto its side after hitting a deep pothole on the stretch late Monday.
The impact left the container blocking part of the road. The driver and his mate, who were the only occupants, were taken to the Holy Family Hospital in Nkawkaw for treatment.
According to witnesses, residents and passing drivers rushed in to help clear the road and secure the scene.
But in the middle of the rescue effort, three individuals were spotted carrying away boxes of sardines from the exposed container. Police officers who arrived at the scene arrested them, and they are now assisting with investigations.
One eyewitness, Ayisetu Wahab, told 7dstvgh that the truck did not appear to be speeding but lost control immediately after hitting the pothole. She said the sight of people stealing while others tried to help prompted bystanders to alert the police.
Officers are working to remove the damaged truck from the road and restore normal traffic flow.
