The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has begun processes to expel former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, following comments in which he described the party as “fake” and distanced himself from its current leadership.
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng made the remarks during an interview on The Point of View with Bernard Avle on Channel One TV on Monday, January 12, 2026. In the interview, he criticised the present state of the party, arguing that it no longer reflects the values and principles of the NPP he once knew.
“The present NPP is not NPP. It is fake. From what I see now, this is not the NPP I used to know,” he stated.
When asked whether he still considered himself a member of the party, the former minister said he no longer associates with what he described as the current version of the NPP.
“Not the fake one. The real one is there. It is a virtual thing. The members are in the background,” he added.
Prof. Frimpong-Boateng also warned that re-electing former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer would be a “trainwreck” for the NPP.
In response, the NPP, in a statement issued on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, and signed by its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, said it had taken serious exception to the comments.
The party said Prof. Frimpong-Boateng not only questioned its credibility but also alleged that the NPP’s 2023 presidential primary was manipulated in favour of Dr. Bawumia, who became the party’s presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.
The NPP firmly rejected the allegation, describing it as baseless and unsubstantiated. The statement maintained that the primary was conducted in a free, fair, transparent and credible manner and was widely accepted by all participating candidates and party members as reflecting the will of the delegates.
The party further described Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s comments as damaging to its unity, values and integrity.
Consequently, the statement said the NPP has invoked the relevant provisions of its constitution to begin the necessary processes to expel him, stressing that all procedures will be carried out in line with due process.
