President John Dramani Mahama has announced that a private investor is preparing to introduce a new ferry service in Tema to link Ghana with several West African countries.
He revealed the initiative on Thursday, November 14, during the commissioning of Phases 1 and 2 of the Tema Port Expansion Project. According to him, the operator has expressed interest in setting up a maritime transport service that will move vehicles, passengers, and goods across the sub-region.
“A private sector maritime operator has approached us with a proposal to establish a ferry service from Tema to other West African states. The ferries will carry vehicles, passengers, and goods along the coast,” President Mahama said.
He indicated that the government is ready to support the project to ensure it becomes a reality and boosts regional trade.
“We will give him all the encouragement needed to establish this service so we can strengthen economic ties and increase the exchange of goods among our people,” he added.
The planned service is expected to improve cross-border movement, reduce transport costs, and open up new opportunities for trade within the West African sub-region.
