The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has addressed a video circulating on social media in which some visiting Black Americans claim they were kidnapped and extorted by individuals posing as police officers.

In a statement issued by the Authority, the GTA confirmed that both the Ghana Police Service and the Cyber Security Authority have already opened full investigations into the allegations. According to the statement, the two agencies are handling the matter with the urgency and seriousness it requires, and updates will be shared when investigations are completed.

The Authority reassured visitors and the general public that Ghana remains a safe and trusted destination, especially as the country welcomes thousands of tourists for the December festivities. It noted that national security systems, together with law enforcement and partners in the tourism sector, have been strengthened to ensure the safety and peace of mind of all visitors.

The GTA encouraged the public to stay calm and give security agencies the space to complete their work. Visitors who need assistance or wish to make enquiries are advised to contact the GTA on 0579579019 or 030 700 7100, or send a WhatsApp message to 0546352240.

“Ghana remains open, secure, and welcoming. Visitors should have full confidence in their safety,” the statement concluded.

The release was signed by Bright Asempa Tsadidey, Director of Corporate Affairs, on behalf of the Chief Executive Officer.
