The Government of Ghana has endorsed the Bawku Conflict Mediation Report presented by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and announced a GH¢1 billion Bawku Revitalisation Fund to support post-conflict reconstruction and development in the area.

The initiative was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, and signed by the Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu. According to the statement, the fund will be disbursed over a three-year period from 2026 to 2028.

The revitalisation programme will focus on key infrastructure and socio-economic recovery projects, including road construction, health and education facilities, irrigation systems and dam projects to support year-round farming. It will also cover security installations as well as economic and commercial infrastructure aimed at restoring livelihoods.

President John Dramani Mahama has directed that the fund be managed by a high-level committee chaired by the Minister for Finance, Cassiel Ato Baah Forson. Other members of the committee include the Upper East Regional Minister, Donaltus Akamuguri, and the Majority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga.

Government officials say the initiative is designed to restore Bawku’s historic role as a major economic and trading hub in the Upper East Region, while also promoting peace, reconciliation, and long-term stability.

The endorsement of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s mediation report and the establishment of the revitalisation fund signal government’s commitment to addressing both the underlying causes and the developmental impact of the protracted Bawku conflict, which has affected lives, livelihoods, and economic activity in the area for decades.

The government has appealed to all stakeholders to support the peace process and cooperate with development efforts to ensure lasting stability and prosperity in Bawku and its surrounding communities.
