The funeral of celebrated Ghanaian musician Daddy Lumba is set to take place tomorrow, Saturday, December 13, after parties involved in a family dispute failed to raise the GH₵2 million ordered by the Accra High Court.

The court had ruled that if the applicants were unable to make the payment, Transitions Funeral Home would be permitted to release the body for burial. Lawyers for the funeral home say they are now waiting for the certified court order to proceed with final arrangements.

This decision follows an earlier injunction that had stopped the family head from organising the funeral and prevented the funeral home from releasing the late musician’s remains. Lawyers for the applicants described the new directive as “practically impossible,” arguing that the court could not vary its previous orders without proper notice. They suggested signing an undertaking to pay the amount later and cautioned that the abrupt change could misinform the public.

Respondents countered that the GH₵2 million was not enough considering the costs already incurred on dignitaries, contractors and other preparations. They asked the court to increase the figure to more than GH₵5 million and insisted that the burial should go ahead if the maternal family failed to comply.

The High Court clarified that the directive does not affect the Daddy Lumba LBG Foundation or the second respondent. It stressed, however, that failure to pay would compel Transitions to release the body, clearing the way for the funeral to proceed while financial issues are addressed.

With the court’s position now settled, preparations are expected to continue for tomorrow’s funeral, marking a major turning point in the long-running dispute over the late icon’s burial.
