The African Union (AU) has expressed grave concern over recent developments in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, including reports of the abduction of President Nicolás Maduro and military attacks on state institutions.
In a communiqué issued from its headquarters in Addis Ababa on Friday, January 3, 2026, the continental body said it is closely monitoring the situation and warned that the unfolding events pose serious risks to peace, stability, and international order.
The AU reaffirmed its firm commitment to the core principles of international law, particularly respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, as well as the right of peoples to self-determination, as enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations.

According to the statement, the Union strongly believes that disputes and internal challenges must be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means. It stressed the importance of respecting constitutional and institutional frameworks and encouraged cooperation and good neighbourliness among nations to promote peaceful coexistence.
The AU noted that Venezuela’s complex internal challenges can only be addressed in a sustainable manner through inclusive political dialogue among Venezuelans themselves, without external interference.
Expressing solidarity with the people of Venezuela, the African Union reiterated its commitment to the promotion of peace, stability, and mutual respect among nations and regions.
The communiqué further called on all parties involved in the situation to exercise restraint, act responsibly, and uphold international law to prevent further escalation and safeguard regional and global peace.
The AU said it would continue to engage with relevant stakeholders as efforts are made to de-escalate tensions and restore stability in Venezuela.
