Bank says branch was never breached as police report shooting of suspected robbers in Labone

GCB Bank has clarified that no robbery or attempted robbery occurred at its Labone branch or anywhere on the bank’s premises, following an earlier statement by the Ghana Police Service concerning an alleged robbery attempt in the Labone area of Accra.

The clarification comes after the Police announced on Thursday, August 13, 2026, that officers had foiled an alleged robbery attempt involving a GCB Bank branch at Labone.

According to the Police, two suspected robbers were shot dead while another was arrested during the operation.

However, GCB Bank has rejected any suggestion that the incident occurred at its Labone branch.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the bank said its branch remained secure and that none of its operations had been disrupted.

“GCB Bank wishes to clarify that no robbery or attempted robbery took place at our Labone Branch or on the Bank’s premises,” the bank stated.

No breach, loss or injuries

GCB Bank said the branch was never breached, adding that no customer or member of staff was affected by the incident.

It further stated that no funds or property belonging to the bank were lost or compromised.

“At no point was the branch breached, and no customer, member of staff, funds or property of the Bank was affected,” the statement said.

The bank’s clarification effectively distinguishes its premises from the incident reported by the Police, which occurred within the wider Labone area.

Customers assured of safety

GCB Bank has assured customers and other stakeholders that its Labone branch remains safe and fully operational.

The bank encouraged customers to continue conducting their banking activities without concern, while indicating that it remains in contact with the relevant authorities regarding developments surrounding the incident.

GCB Bank said it would continue to monitor the situation and cooperate with the authorities where necessary.

The clarification is expected to help prevent confusion among customers and members of the public following the earlier police communication.

The bank reiterated its commitment to the safety and security of its customers, staff and assets, stressing that its Labone branch remains secure and operational.
