GAF escort convoy attacked in Binduri; three civilians killed

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed that three civilians were killed when an escort convoy came under attack by unknown gunmen in Binduri in the Upper East Region.

According to a statement signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin of the Ghana Navy, Acting Director General of Public Relations, the incident occurred on Monday, May 27, 2026. The convoy, which was transporting about 140 civilians from Bawku to Bolgatanga, was ambushed and subjected to heavy gunfire.

The military said the attackers opened fire multiple times on the convoy, resulting in the deaths of three civilians, while one other person sustained injuries.

Security personnel escorting the convoy returned fire and successfully repelled the attackers. In the exchange, seven of the assailants were killed.

“In the process, the military successfully repelled the attack on the convoy, resulting in the death of seven assailants,” the statement noted.

The GAF further disclosed that a follow-up operation led to the recovery of weapons and ammunition from a suspect who attempted to flee and hide in a mosque. Items retrieved included a G3 automatic rifle, two fully loaded magazines containing 20 rounds each, and an additional 176 rounds of ammunition.

Ten other suspects have since been arrested and are currently assisting security agencies with investigations into the incident.

The military has urged the public to cooperate with security personnel during operations and avoid actions that could compromise safety.

GAF also extended its condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery as efforts continue to restore calm in the area.
