Sunyani, Ghana – December 10, 2025 – The National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) has appealed to the government to release outstanding monthly allowances owed to Assembly Members and to expedite the procurement of motorbikes to support their work.
The appeal came during NALAG’s recently concluded 4th Quarter National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting at Tyco City Hotel in Sunyani, where officials expressed concern over delays in the disbursement of allowances to Assembly Members nationwide.
NALAG commended President John Dramani Mahama and the government for allocating GH₵100 million in the 2025 national budget to cover Assembly Members’ allowances. However, the association noted that only payments for April and May have been released, leaving six months’ worth of allowances pending. According to NALAG, the delay is causing financial strain and operational challenges for members, many of whom work tirelessly with limited logistical support.
Appeal to Finance Minister
In line with resolutions from the NEC, NALAG formally urged the Minister of Finance to release the outstanding funds to the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA) for onward distribution to Assembly Members. The association emphasized that timely payment is essential for fairness, good governance, and the decentralization agenda.
Motorbikes for Assembly Members
NALAG also called on the government to prioritize the procurement and distribution of motorbikes to Assembly Members. The association said the vehicles are critical tools for effective monitoring, community engagement, and service delivery, especially in areas where members are required to cover large geographic regions.
Reassurance to Assembly Members
In the statement, NALAG reassured Assembly Members that their welfare remains a top priority. The association confirmed it is engaging government officials at the highest levels to ensure both the release of outstanding allowances and the procurement of motorbikes.
Conclusion
NALAG expressed confidence that the Ministers of Finance and Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs would act swiftly to address the concerns, sustain motivation among Assembly Members, and strengthen grassroots governance across Ghana.
