The Ministry of Sports and Recreation will on Monday, September 29, 2025, inaugurate a newly formed Boxing Interim Management Committee (IMC) following the dissolution of the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) board last Friday. The ceremony is scheduled for 1:00 PM at the Ministry’s Conference Room.

Ahead of the inauguration, Sports Minister Kofi Adams met with members of the IMC, including legendary boxer Azumah Nelson, in a session led by the Director-General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah. The meeting served as a precursor to the committee’s formal induction.

The IMC’s creation comes in the wake of the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju, who collapsed during a bout at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra on March 29, 2025. Following the incident, the Ministry established an independent investigative committee chaired by Rtd. Amarkai Amarteifio, which later submitted a 100-page report recommending reforms to improve safety and discipline in Ghanaian boxing.

Addressing the committee members, Minister Kofi Adams stressed the need for urgent reforms, noting that the normalisation process is focused on restoring credibility to the sport.

“This is not about personalities; it is about the future of our sport. We are determined to restore boxing to a state of professionalism, safety, and international respect,” he said.

The Minister outlined immediate priorities, including stricter medical protocols, updated health records for boxers, the establishment of a Medical Commission, and stronger anti-doping measures in collaboration with the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).

He tasked the IMC to work swiftly, transparently, and impartially, with the expectation that structured boxing activities will resume before the end of the year.

The Ministry has also prepared a white paper detailing its official stance on the investigative report, which the IMC will implement under ministerial oversight.
