Maize farmers at Wenchi Akrobi in the Bono Region say they are losing their investments as a severe dry spell continues to destroy their crops. Many of them are calling on government to intervene to help protect their livelihoods.

During interviews with our correspondent, Nana Anfreh Damanata, on Friday, December 4, the farmers expressed frustration over the impact of the prolonged dry conditions, which have wiped out acres of maize farms at a time the nation is celebrating the 41st National Farmers Day.

Madam Akua Attaa, one of the affected farmers, said she was distressed about the state of her three-acre maize farm, which has withered due to the drought. She explained that she invested about GH¢15,000 with hopes of a good harvest, only for the dry spell to destroy her entire crop.

She appealed to government for urgent assistance, noting that many farmers in the area depend entirely on their farms to support their families.

Mr. Stephen Abrefah Takyi, another maize farmer, also appealed for support. He said farmers need alternative income-generating opportunities to cushion them during extreme weather conditions.

Hon. Eric Osei, the Assembly Member for the Akrobi Electoral Area and a maize farmer himself, revealed that his 35-acre maize farm has also been destroyed due to the lack of rainfall. He said the situation highlights the need for long-term interventions.

He called on government to establish and strengthen irrigation systems to support all-year farming, boost food production, and reduce the impact of climate change and unpredictable rainfall patterns.

Farmers in the area say without immediate help, many families risk losing their main source of income and food security.
