A total of 118 New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidates from the 2024 general election have declared their support for former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia ahead of the party’s 2028 presidential primaries. The group described Dr. Bawumia as the most prepared, credible, and winnable candidate to lead the party into the next general election.
The endorsement was announced at a press conference held on Thursday, January 8, 2026. According to the group, their decision was informed by Dr. Bawumia’s experience in government, competence, clear vision for national development, and proven leadership qualities, which they believe set him apart from other flagbearer hopefuls.
Addressing journalists, the leader of the group and former Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, said the candidates had critically assessed all aspirants contesting the NPP’s flagbearership. He noted that the endorsement followed careful consideration rather than sentiment or political convenience.
“We have followed the campaigns of all these fine gentlemen of our party, some of whom have chalked up immense successes in business, governance, and the policy space,” Mr. Egyapa Mercer stated. “However, when all the key parameters required for leading our great party into the 2028 election are taken together, none of them matches the pedigree, experience, competence, vision, bold ideas, humility, and compassion that Dr. Bawumia embodies.”
He further described the former Vice President as “the most prepared, formidable, and winnable candidate” capable of uniting the party and appealing to the broader Ghanaian electorate in the 2028 general election. According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s leadership style and policy orientation give the NPP a strategic advantage.
The group also dismissed claims that their endorsement was influenced by inducement, pressure, or coercion. They stressed that the decision was taken voluntarily and solely in the interest of the NPP and the country at large.
