The Wenchi District Court has fined five members of a mobile money fraud syndicate a total of GH¢30,000 for their roles in a fraudulent electronic fund transfer scheme.

The court, presided over by His Worship Issah Abdul Wahab, convicted the accused persons after they pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit crime, to wit defrauding by false pretence, and defrauding by false pretence. Each of the convicts was fined GH¢6,000, in default of which they would have served six months’ imprisonment. The fines have since been paid in full.

The convicts are Edward Amuzu, also known as Kwame Tina (26); Salifu Nurudeen, also known as El-man (25); Godfred Acquah, also known as Kofi Biggs or Agabus (25); and Maxwell Fosu Kwakye (31). A fifth suspect remains at large. The convicts are residents of Kasoa, Winneba, and Asin Fosu in the Central Region.

Presenting the facts of the case, the police prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Samuel Sameji, told the court that the complainant, Sylvester Declerq Mensah, a 54-year-old agriculturalist living at Wenchi Boadan in the Bono Region, reported on April 24, 2025, that he had been defrauded of GH¢130,000 by unknown persons through electronic transactions.

Following the complaint, police launched investigations, which led to the arrest of the suspects on January 18, 2026.

ASP Sameji further told the court that the entire amount of money involved in the case was retrieved from the accused persons.

In his ruling, His Worship Abdul Wahab ordered the police to return the recovered funds to the complainant. The court noted that the convicts were first-time offenders and that there was no evidence linking them to other fraud cases beyond the complaint before the court.

Based on these considerations, the court convicted them on their own pleas and imposed the fines, after which the convicts were discharged upon payment in full.
