The Ghana Police Service has arrested 77 suspects during a special anti-drug operation carried out in Tamale and Savelugu.
The operation was conducted by the Northern Regional Police Command through a Special Operations Team known as “Red Maria” on Monday, March 23, 2026, at about 9:30 p.m., with a team of 33 officers participating in the exercise.

Operation Targeted Drug Hotspots
According to the police, the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on drug trafficking and related criminal activities in the Northern Region.
The exercise targeted several identified drug hotspots, beginning from Lamashegu, where one suspect was arrested. The team later moved to the Aboabo Market area, where another suspect was apprehended with a powdered substance suspected to be cocaine.
Further intelligence led officers to NOBISCO, where an alleged drug supplier was arrested. However, a search conducted at his residence did not reveal any incriminating items.

Major Arrests in Savelugu
The operation was later extended to Savelugu, where a major raid was carried out at a known drug peddling enclave, leading to the arrest of 74 additional suspects.
Police retrieved several items during the operation, including seven motorbikes, a Toyota Camry vehicle, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, and 10 sachets of Tramadol.
