The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced that more than 2,000 kilometres of roads across all 16 regions of Ghana are currently undergoing major reconstruction and upgrading under the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme.

Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, the Minister stated that under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama, road projects across the country have not been halted or cancelled without justification.

Parliament Approves Funding for Road Programme

The Minister further disclosed that Parliament has so far approved nearly GH¢50 billion to support the government’s multi-year road and bridge development programme, which forms part of the Big Push initiative aimed at improving road infrastructure nationwide.

According to him, the significant financial commitment demonstrates strong legislative support for the programme and the government’s commitment to improving road networks across the country.

Call for Public Monitoring of Projects

Mr. Agbodza also called on citizens to actively monitor road projects in their communities to help promote transparency and accountability. He welcomed constructive feedback from the public on the progress of road projects.

“As I speak, over 2,000 kilometres of roads in all 16 regions of our country are undergoing extensive transformation. In times past, we have all been concerned by the state of our roads, mindful of the amount of money invested,” he said.

Government Paying Road Sector Debts

The Minister also addressed concerns about road sector debts, revealing that the government has taken steps to settle outstanding arrears owed to contractors.

He explained that the road sector had inherited debts of over GH¢40 billion from the previous administration, and that more than GH¢11 billion has already been paid to reduce the arrears.

According to him, this represents one of the largest arrears clearance efforts in the country’s history within a relatively short period.

He added that it would be unfair for anyone to conclude that the Ministry of Roads and Highways only awards contracts through sole sourcing, explaining that various procurement methods are used depending on the nature and urgency of projects.

The Big Push initiative remains one of the government’s major infrastructure programmes aimed at improving road connectivity, supporting economic growth, and facilitating transportation across the country.
