President John Dramani Mahama has directed the interdiction of Ghana National Fire Service officers implicated in the assault of a Class FM journalist at Kasoa New Market, calling the attack “unacceptable” and a threat to media freedom.

The President confirmed that the officers involved have been identified and removed from active duty while investigations continue.

“This kind of violence against journalists has no place in a democratic society,” President Mahama said, stressing that the incident contradicts the professionalism expected of security personnel and undermines the constitutional role of the media.

He called for a reorientation of officers across security services, emphasizing proper engagement with journalists performing their duties.

President Mahama made the remarks on Thursday, January 8, 2026, during a visit to the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC). He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting press freedom and ensuring accountability within state institutions.

The assault on the Class FM reporter sparked public outrage, with media groups demanding swift action against the officers. The President’s directive represents the government’s first official response to the incident.
