The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority, Maame Efua Houadjeto, has led a group of students and staff on an educational tour of the Fair Afrik Cocoa Processing Company at Suhum as part of activities marking this year’s Cocoa and Love Month.

The visit brought together selected students from schools in Chorkor, Mamprobi and Dansoman in Accra, along with some GTA staff, to give them first-hand exposure to how cocoa is processed into finished chocolate products.

The tour forms part of preliminary activities ahead of the official launch of Chocolate and Love Month, an annual campaign by the Ghana Tourism Authority to promote the consumption of locally made chocolate and cocoa-based products, while highlighting Ghana’s cocoa heritage.

During the visit, students were taken through the various stages of cocoa processing, from bean selection to chocolate production, and educated on the value chain behind one of Ghana’s most important agricultural commodities.

The exercise also serves as a pilot phase of a new initiative championed by the GTA CEO to revive and strengthen domestic tourism among students across the country. The programme is expected to be rolled out nationwide in partnership with the Ghana National Association of Private Schools.

Officials say the initiative aims to blend education with tourism by encouraging schoolchildren to visit key production and heritage sites, helping them better understand Ghana’s industries while promoting local tourism.
