Ghana has donated engineering equipment and logistical supplies to the Jamaican Defence Force to support ongoing recovery and reconstruction efforts following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

The items were presented on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama to Jamaica’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, during an official visit by a Ghanaian delegation on Sunday, January 25, 2026. The delegation was led by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.

According to the Ghana Armed Forces, the visit allowed the delegation to assess reconstruction works on the ground, receive operational briefings, and evaluate the welfare of Ghanaian troops deployed as part of a multinational humanitarian mission. The team also toured several project sites where Ghanaian engineering personnel are rebuilding and rehabilitating homes for communities affected by the hurricane.

The reconstruction activities form part of broader humanitarian interventions aimed at restoring livelihoods and improving living conditions in the hardest-hit areas.

Both the Ghanaian and Jamaican Foreign Ministers commended the deployed personnel for their dedication and professionalism, noting that the collaboration between Ghana, Jamaica and Guyana reflects strong regional solidarity and a shared commitment to humanitarian assistance.

The Commander of the Ghana Engineering Reconstruction Team, Colonel Emmanuel Asia, later briefed the delegation on progress made, challenges encountered, and plans for the remaining phase of the reconstruction exercise.

Other members of the delegation included the Deputy Minister for Defence, Ernest Brogya Genfi; the Chief of the Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu; and Ghana’s Special Envoy to the Caribbean Region, Kwasi Kyei Darkwah.
