The Ghana Air Force has taken delivery of its first Airbus H175 helicopter, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing modernisation of the country’s military aviation fleet.

The newly acquired aircraft arrived in Accra on Thursday, March 5, 2026, after being ferried from Marignane, France, where it successfully completed all technical acceptance procedures with its manufacturer, Airbus Helicopters.

In a statement shared on its official social media platforms, the Ghana Air Force described the arrival of the helicopter as an important step in the broader effort to upgrade and retool its operational capabilities. The acquisition forms part of a wider defence procurement programme approved by Parliament to strengthen the effectiveness of the Ghana Armed Forces.

Upon its arrival, the helicopter was inspected by the Acting Minister for Defence, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, together with Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi and other government officials. The aircraft is expected to support a range of operations carried out by the Ghana Air Force.

Ghana placed its first order for the multi-mission Airbus helicopters on January 15, 2026, in a move aimed at enhancing the country’s defence, security, and air transport capabilities.

According to Airbus Helicopters, the agreement with Ghana’s Ministry of Defence includes the supply of four helicopters comprising two H175M helicopters, one ACH175, and one ACH160.

The procurement forms part of the government’s broader plan to upgrade the air capabilities of the Ghana Armed Forces. During the presentation of the 2026 Budget Statement in Parliament on November 13, 2025, the Finance Minister announced that government would begin the process of acquiring four modern helicopters, as well as one long-range and one medium-range aircraft, starting in 2026.

Authorities say the additions are expected to significantly improve the operational readiness and response capacity of the Ghana Air Force in both security and humanitarian missions.
