Hon. Engineer George Kofi Arthur, former Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, has officially declared his readiness to contest for the position of Western Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), presenting himself as a unifier with deep institutional knowledge and a proven track record.
With three consecutive terms in Parliament from 2005 to 2017, Arthur enters the race with more than a decade of legislative experience and long-standing involvement in party structures.
Born on February 24, 1969, at Wassa Agona Amenfi in the Western Region, his political career has been closely tied to grassroots mobilization and national engagement within the NDC. During his time in Parliament, he built a reputation for committee leadership and policy engagement, serving on several key committees including Roads and Transport, Public Accounts, Agriculture, Housing, Employment and Social Welfare, and Defence and Interior.
Notably, he chaired the Defence and Interior Committee and served as Deputy Ranking Member of the Public Accounts Committee for over ten years, roles that demanded oversight, discipline, and institutional leadership.
Academic and Professional Background
Arthur’s academic credentials reflect a blend of education, engineering, and governance. He holds:
- A Diploma in Education (Distinction in Educational Technology) from Presbyterian College of Education
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology (Electronics and Automotive option) from the University of Education, Winneba
- A Master’s Degree in Governance and Leadership from GIMPA
His professional journey spans teaching, engineering, electronics, and construction. He has worked with Toyota Ghana, Anyasco Electronics, and Afrangua Construction Limited, contributing to major road infrastructure projects across the Western and Western North Regions.
Supporters say this hands-on experience gives him practical insight into the region’s development challenges, particularly in infrastructure, employment creation, and industrial growth.

Deep Roots Within the NDC
Within the party, Arthur’s credentials stretch from constituency-level leadership to national engagement. He has served as General Secretary of the Mpohor Constituency and as a member of the party’s National Communications Team. His long-standing involvement in party organization is being positioned as a key asset in strengthening internal cohesion.
Political observers within the party argue that his legislative background, administrative experience, and grassroots connections make him a strong contender for the Western Regional Chairmanship. They point to his ability to coordinate across constituencies and stakeholder groups as critical at a time when the NDC is preparing for future electoral contests.
As internal party processes gather momentum, George Kofi Arthur is pitching his candidacy on experience, discipline, and organizational depth, framing himself as a leader ready to consolidate the party’s structures and boost performance in the Western Region.
