Fatal Fuel Tanker Explosion on Suhum-Accra Highway Leaves Three Dead, Several Injured

Eastern Region, February 14, 2026 – A fuel tanker carrying petrol from Tema to Kumasi was involved in a deadly accident on the Accra-Suhum dual carriageway at Ntoaso on Saturday, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries.

Preliminary reports from the Eastern South Regional Police Command indicate that the tanker lost control, leading to a massive explosion that engulfed vehicles behind it. Six cars and four motorcycles were destroyed in the blast.

Tragically, three bodies, including two charred male victims and another unidentified person inside a burnt vehicle, were recovered at the scene. Four other individuals sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The Ghana National Fire Service teams from Suhum and Nsawam were deployed to contain the fire and prevent further damage. Meanwhile, police have begun visiting local hospitals to identify victims and are working to clear the accident site to restore traffic flow.

Motorists on the Suhum-Accra route are being urged to drive cautiously, reduce speed, and adhere strictly to police directives for their safety.

DSP David Fianko-Okyere of the Eastern South Regional Public Affairs Unit confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the crash.

This incident highlights ongoing road safety concerns on high-traffic routes and the risks posed by transporting flammable materials.
