The Majority Chief Whip in Parliament, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has called on the family of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to encourage him to return to Ghana and submit himself to due process.

His remarks follow concerns raised by the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, over the conduct of some Majority Members of Parliament during the recent State of the Nation Address.

Minority Raises Concerns Over Parliamentary Conduct

Mr. Afenyo-Markin criticised the display of placards by some Majority MPs which featured images of Mr. Ofori-Atta during the proceedings.

According to the Minority Leader, political disagreements should not lead to actions that could damage the reputation of individuals who have not been found guilty by a court of law.

He warned that allowing such conduct to continue could set an unhealthy precedent in Parliament and undermine the decorum expected within the legislative chamber.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin therefore appealed to the leadership of the Majority to ensure that similar incidents do not recur, stressing the need to maintain peace and order in the House.

Majority Chief Whip Responds

Responding to the concerns, Mr. Dafeamekpor maintained that the former Finance Minister should return to the country and face any legal or investigative processes that may be required.

He urged Mr. Ofori-Atta’s family to support efforts aimed at ensuring he submits himself to the appropriate authorities.

According to the Majority Chief Whip, respecting due process remains essential in addressing issues of public accountability.

Debate Reflects Ongoing Political Tensions

The exchange highlights the continuing political tensions between the Majority and Minority in Parliament regarding the handling of matters involving former government officials.

However, both sides have emphasised the importance of maintaining parliamentary decorum and adherence to the rule of law as the issue continues to generate debate within the House.
