An Accra Circuit Court has ordered a man to pay GH¢200,000 in damages to a woman after ruling that he failed to honour his promise to marry her.
The case began when Vince Kontoh sued Ernestina Torgbor, seeking her eviction from a property. In response, Torgbor filed a counterclaim, arguing that Kontoh had breached his promise to marry her after their relationship ended.
The matter was presided over by Justice Sedinam Awo Kwadam, a High Court judge sitting with additional responsibility as a Circuit Court judge.
In her ruling, the judge held that both parties have an interest in the disputed property. She dismissed Kontoh’s request for eviction and upheld Torgbor’s counterclaim for breach of promise to marry.
“The Plaintiff’s claim for ejectment is dismissed in its entirety. Judgment is entered for the Defendant on her counterclaim for breach of promise to marry,” the court ruled.
As a result, the court awarded GH¢200,000 in compensation to Torgbor.
The decision underscores the legal implications of personal commitments and highlights that promises made within intimate relationships can carry significant consequences when broken.
