Member of Parliament for Akuapem North, Samuel Awuku, has formally requested detailed information regarding the arrest and detention of the vessel M/V Sankofa within Ghana’s territorial waters.
In a letter addressed to the Ghana Maritime Authority, the lawmaker raised a series of questions aimed at establishing the circumstances surrounding the vessel’s interception and subsequent enforcement actions.
Mr. Awuku is seeking clarity on the exact date the vessel departed Ghana’s territorial waters, as well as whether the ship and its crew were arrested or detained by authorities. He also questioned the legal basis for the action, asking the Authority to specify the regulatory breaches that justified the arrest.

The MP further inquired about any sanctions imposed, including whether the vessel’s operators were prosecuted or made to pay fines or penalties. He requested details on the total amount paid, if any, and whether any fines were waived, including who authorized such decisions.
Additionally, the Akuapem North legislator is demanding information on compliance measures taken after the incident. This includes whether deficiencies identified during inspections were rectified and if there are documents to confirm compliance.

Mr. Awuku emphasized that the request is in the public interest, stressing the need for transparency and accountability in the enforcement of Ghana’s maritime laws. He noted that such clarity is essential to safeguarding the country’s international reputation and ensuring adherence to established legal standards.
He urged the Authority to respond within the statutory timeframe stipulated under relevant laws, indicating his readiness to provide further clarification if required.
