Police in the Central Region have arrested a recent Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidate for allegedly assaulting a female teacher at St. John’s Catholic ‘B’ Basic School at Abrem Agona.

The suspect, identified as James Mensah, is accused of attacking the school’s science teacher, Madam Matilda Mensah, during teaching hours under circumstances that are currently being investigated.

According to reports, the incident caused fear and tension among staff and students at the school, with some teachers expressing concern over increasing acts of indiscipline and violence against educators.

Sources say the situation escalated further after the suspect allegedly went to the teacher’s residence and continued issuing threats following the initial confrontation at the school.

Officials of the Ghana National Association of Teachers reportedly intervened after the incident and assisted law enforcement officers in apprehending the suspect.

James Mensah is currently in police custody and is expected to be processed for court in connection with the alleged assault and threats.

The incident has sparked discussions within the education community about the safety of teachers in schools and the growing need for stronger disciplinary measures and counselling support for students.

Some education stakeholders have also called for intensified collaboration between parents, teachers and community leaders to help address behavioural challenges among students and protect teachers from abuse and intimidation in the line of duty.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
