The Ghana Armed Forces have begun clearing the right of way for the construction of a new 198-kilometre Accra–Kumasi Expressway, marking a significant step in one of government’s flagship infrastructure projects.
The proposed route, which will stretch from Ablekuma through Oda to Sewia, is a key component of the broader transport vision under President John Dramani Mahama aimed at improving connectivity between the southern and middle belts of the country.

Clearing Exercise Underway
According to a statement by Ernest Brogya Gyenfi, the clearing exercise commenced in March 2025 and is expected to be completed within 20 weeks.
The involvement of the military is intended to ensure efficiency and speed in preparing the corridor for full-scale construction works.
Government Engages Traditional Authority
In a move to strengthen stakeholder support, a high-powered government delegation paid a courtesy call on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace.

The delegation was led by the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, and included Deputy Minister Alhassan Suhuyini, the Chief of Defence Staff, as well as senior officials from the Ministries of Roads and Defence and their respective agencies.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II pledged his full support for the project and urged the team to remain focused on delivering the road despite external criticisms.
Boosting Trade and Connectivity
The Accra–Kumasi Expressway is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the two major economic hubs while improving the movement of goods and services.

Government says the project will not only ease congestion on existing routes but also enhance regional trade, stimulate economic activity, and support long-term national development goals.
Once completed, the expressway is anticipated to become a critical transport artery, linking key commercial centres and opening up new opportunities for businesses along the corridor.
