Bawku: Two Tricycle Operators Ambushed and Shot Dead

Two tricycle operators have been shot dead at Zanamat, a suburb of Bawku, in a violent attack that has shocked residents in the area.

The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, as the victims, residents of Bankango in the Binduri District, were travelling to attend to a customer in the Bawku township. The customer was reported to be a trader of Igbo descent.

According to eyewitness accounts, the two men were accosted on the road by a group of young men who allegedly called in armed assailants to open fire on them. One of the victims died instantly, while the other sustained critical injuries.

Both victims were rushed to the Vineyard Hospital in Bawku for treatment. However, the injured victim later succumbed to his injuries, bringing the death toll to two.

Confirming the incident, the Assembly Member for the Binduri Electoral Area, Azumah Emmanuel, said he received information from the police indicating that two residents from his area had been killed in the attack.

“I received a call from the police indicating that two of my electorates have been shot dead. They are one Bissa boy and another Moshi boy,” Mr Emmanuel stated.

The victims have been identified as Salifu Shaibu and Asaana Mbawin.

This incident is the first major fatal attack recorded in the area since the beginning of the year, heightening concerns about safety and security within the Bawku enclave.

Police investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to track down the perpetrators.
